Default Monitor going to sleep

I have a H.P Pavilion A1423W when booting up all I get is Monitor going to sleep. Was told by some one that my hard drive is gone and needs to be replaced, what other things could cause this??

HI first check to see there are no bent pins in the lead the connects between the PC and monitor a bent pin can do this. Also do you get any picture on the screen like when the PC is booting up before this happens. Sounds like it maybe just a video card issue which can be fixed. Is it making any beeping noises when you turn the PC on. E.g 1 long beep 2 short

Hi Whelan
Can you boot in safemode?
Have you installed new software or drivers recently? (video drivers perhaps?)
