Default Friend Dowloaded my personal files

Hello,

I am running a Dell Precision M6300 PC with Windows XP operating system.

About 4 days ago, a friend of mine asked to view what music and videos I have on my computer. Thinking nothing of it, I let him use my PC while I left and did something else.

Not realizing it until later, he went into all my files asking me questions about some of my personal - legally private work. I then took the computer back and left the room again.. only to find him sneakily Downloading more files from my PC to his memory card when I returned.

How do I open a window to view activity during the time that he downloaded my files to see which files he got his dirtly little hands on, before I confront him about his un-honest behavior?

I have many client files that are not released and are not to be released for 3 years to the general public, not only could I lose my job, but I could lose all my assets...

I hope you can assist me.

This person is accessing your computer ILLEGALLY. Since he's constantly on your PC remotely, he could compromise your security and steal files from your PC. The technique you are thinking of is called "Monitoring".

I would suggest several options:

1.) COMODO Firewall Pro (This is an EXCELLENT FREE firewall with almost perfect reviews.

2.) Free Hide Folders

3.) ESP Monitoring & Keylogger 2.0 free download

#3 is a secret monitoring/capture software that cannot be quitted in Process Manager. Give it a try...

Welcome Viridis,

Without having a keylogger installed PRIOR to your snoopy "friend's" behavior, I don't believe that you will be able to obtain a history of what was viewed.

Recent files in Word or Excel might give you a clue, but nothing that will definitively say that a file was copied on this date & date.

You might request that your "friend" let you review the contents of his memory card. Make this request in person when you know they have the memory card in hand so an opportunity isn't presented where the card could be cleared before you view.

If you are in a profession where confidence is the rule, you might consider password protecting files or folders of a confidential nature. Encryption software is another alternative - that would alter the hard drive so files would be unreadable unless the proper password is supplied. Either that or keep your computer strictly for your use.

Best of luck.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the quick response/replies. I will look into these options.

I was under the impression that all PC's contained "Activity Logs" where you could see this information, but I do not know how to access this log.

Is this true, or am I in the wrong.

thanks again and thanks for the warm welcome!

In an off-hand way, you can search for the specified date to see file changes...the only drawback is that if you have accessed any of those files since, you won't know if it was accessed or not.

I used this method once to bust a maintenance man who accessed my computer which I had turned off while I was on vacation.

But neither a file copy nor a file open for reading will change the file modified date. Only if the file is modified will the date be updated.
