I ran HijackThis, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and ComboFix in Oct 2008 as my computer had a Hijack / Virus. I am still using Norton Internet Security. This repaired the computer and everything was working OK.
I tried to connect another computer (laptop) but I could not see the new computer so I thought I would simply restore to a date before this. When I run System Restore while I can select a date from many when it runs it advises that "unable to restore to this date". Also since this time my Internet is not working reliably, sometimes it connects, other times I have to turn off the router, wait 5 mins and turn on again. When I tried to repair the network connection I now get a message as picture 1 "clearing the DNS cache".
Also how can I unbridge these two network connections (picture 2)
Any help much appreciated

The virus may have destroyed your System Resore points. If it did, then they are non-usable. Also, if your internet connection is bad, and since you say "router", I'm guessing you have wireless internet. If so, here's a solution:
1.) If your PC has an Ethernet port on the back and if you have an Ethernet jack in your house, find an Ethernet cable and plug it in ("hard wired" connection). This will give you reliable connections. 2.) Once you have established a connection, use Microsoft Update to upgrade to the lastest Service Pack, 3 for XP, 1 for Vista. These will have drivers you can use. 3.) Once installed and rebooted, uninstall ANY drivers for your wireless card (assuming you have one). 4.) Reboot 5.) When Windows has found New Hardware, click OK and it will search and install the latest drivers from "SP3.cab". 6.) Reboot 7.) Right-click My Computer, then Manage 8.) Click on Services 9.) Scroll down until your see the "Wireless Zero Configuration" service. 10.) Stop it, then restart it. 11.) You should now have an established wireless connection. If this doesn't help, please post whether it's wireless or wired. ***By the way, once you have wireless up and running, you don't need your Ethernet cable anymore.*** |

I am using a hard wired ethernet connection to the router
BT Voyager 205 ADSL Router (does not have wireless facility) and am running XP service pack 3. When I did the repair in Oct 08 I followed the instructions posted in http://www.pchelpforum.com/spyware-a...-required.html Thanks |

Hello,
Do you consider your thread Answered/Resolved/Fixed? Do you still require further assistance? JB.

As I have a wired internet connection I did not understand what I had to do ?
When I ran Combifix etc in Oct 2008 it did not advise me that my System Restore points would be unavailable. I have subsequently bought a new hard drive BUT I would like to get the system working without have to fit the new drive. Thanks Jeff |

Jeff let me give you a few things to do.
I also advise you run the "Prework" for our Security Team to rule out malware hiddin on your system. Open command prompt and copy and paste in: ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter on your keyboard. You can also try: ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew http://www.pchelpforum.com/windows-t...-ipconfig.html
