Default Can't install xp, drive not working

Hi,

Up until a few weeks ago I was running xp with sp2 on a dell inspiron 1720. Anyway, one day my dog knocked the laptop off the coffee table when the dvd drive was open and smashed it into pieces (the dvd drive that is). Needless to say the dog wasn't that popular. So I went down to the local PC shop and they found a pioneer drive that fitted into my laptop. Was working fine and was burning cd/dvd's fine at first. I then got hold of a new version of XP with sp3 from a friend, so since I hadn't formatted my hdd for a while I installed it. That's when the problems started. Now my laptop won't recognize my portable hdd. Also my dvd drive won't burn anything. It gets to the end of the burn process and stops before it's finished. I tried to reinstall my old version of xp and it won't let me do that as well. While installing the files, it gets to one file, sits there for a minute then I get an error message that says that it can't install the file and just reboots. I've even tried it with another version of xp and I get the same error.

Any ideas?

Thansk

Hello there, what you needed to do was reinstall the hardware drivers for the system and the pioneer drive.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry, but I'm not the greatest with technical stuff. Where do I find these drivers? What do you mean about the drivers for the system?

Hello ok go here and fill in the exact make and model of your computer:Dell Drivers and Downloads

Then choose the operating system.

This when will give you a list of hardware.

Audio,Chipset, communications and so on,these are your hardware drivers.

You can download them and run.
