I have an old machine with XP and for some reason it boots up fine-then the screen blinks like windows explorer is resetting it's self or something. Not having time to worry about an old machine I just put in the XP disc and did a repair in case it was a boot log issue-but it's not it went thought the repair fine now the same exact thing. Whats odd is you can open folders but then they just blink and it goes back through the same thing again-I thought it was the monitor-added a new-nothing the on board video could be the issue but it's only pci so nopne of my vidseo cards will fit so I can teat it. Never heard of a virus doing this--any Ideas--I thought I would ask before I chunk the whole thing since the board is 20 years old and I have plenty of newer ones--

I think you may have answered your own question, install a newer mother board and cpu in it and you will be good to go. You will have to a repair install though.

A good answer but perhaps I lead the question a bit-I want to know specifically what this is. I have already repaired the operating system-it's fine-I can even play a video-but it still blinks and resets windows explorer. The mother board is working-the video is working-so the cpu is working.I know I can just rebuild it-it's just something I have never seen with Windows-and I have seen plenty.
