Default Reformat Issues

Hey everyone, sup? So here is my story...

I like to reformat at least once a year, and have done so at least 3-4 times now with no issues. The way I normally do this is through the recovery console using format C: etc..

However this time i did it through windows setup where u press D to delete a partition & then format the unpartitioned space as NTFS or w/e. so anyway, originally I was unable to find my XP Home disc, so instead i installed windows XP x64 pro, everything was fine. however, I later found my disc & had read on some forums that xp 64 bit isn't really that great. So i decided ok, before i go installing all my software, i'll just reformat & reinstall my 32 bit home edition.

so i do the same thing i just did through windows setup. howerver this time once i have everything is installed i notice half of my hard drive capacity is used up. it said 130gb free of 238gb. I have no idea where this space is being used or how. Anyway I thot maybe i had partitioned it or something...so i looked for another drive or something with the space on it. but i only have the C: drive with 238gb on it and only 130gb FREE space. This time i decided to reformat the way i normally do through recovery console. when i type map ENTER it shows only ONE installation of windows on C: with 238gb capacity. so i selected that to reformat and it started the reformat. However when it gets to about 55% of the reformat complete it jumps to 100% & when i try to reinstall windows after that it says that there is only 130gb free of unpartitioned space and that's it! I'd really like to kno what happened to the other 100gb.

anyone kno what happened and how i can fix it?

Hello and welcome to PCHelpForum.

I know you said you deleted the partition, did you resize it during this process before formatting?

I have marked your thread as "Open" ready for the guys and girls to help you.

No I don't think I resized the partition at any point. However, if I did i THINK it would show the resized partition as well as the leftover space (assuming i made the partition smaller) as unpartitioned space. In this case it shows only 1 partition that comes up as something like:

Partition1 (NEW RAW): 238634 Mb (131000 Mb FREE)

i'm not at home atm but it's something similar to that

so i tried looking at a few of the recovery console commands, the ones relating to disk partitions bc i think that's what u meant for me to look at? But yea i had similar issues with it only showing 130gb of space when really have about 230gb capacity. BUT anyway....good news.

the problem is SOLVED!! I asked my friend who works in IT & he said that if the windows disc is pre-sp2 it may only recognize up to 130gb. Why that is I don't kno...?? I thot even without a windows disc the BIOS could recognize the hdd capacity? or am I wrong? (just curious).

Anyway, i installed the OS and updated it with SP2 and it's working fine now. =) Ty all for ur time and help
