Default DVD / Soundcard disabled after driver crash

I was installing a driver for my TV capture card - which has worked fine before- when the computer crashed. Now the computer won’t recognize the DVD burner or sound card. I am getting an error code 39 error message.

I’ve tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers without luck. I also found this Microsoft repair guide which I tried to no avail:

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

I am using Microsoft XP professional SP2. I was able to plug in another hard drive with XP installed and both sound and the DVD drive worked fine so it’s not a hardware issue.

Welcome Asennad,

Does that mean that you have deleted both the Upper & Lower Filters referenced in the Microsoft Knowledgebase article? When that doesn't work, I've had success following the #4 step found here

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Barugon’s Cave (^_^)

Hi Have you tried a system restore to just before you had the problem?

I went through suggested Microsoft procedure and deleted the upper and lower registry using their automated program. I tried it again and it said the targeted registry entries were gone and I checked the registry and didn't see them.

So I tried the suggestions and ran DevCon and this is what I came up with. Where do I go from here?

Try this fix:

Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer

thereafter try:

Go:

Start - Run - (type) sfc /scannow (with the space)(Enter)

sfc = System File Checker restores files to their correct state.

This may require you to put in your XP CD.

If you wish for futher, detailed, information on this procedure please click here:

scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker) in this article!

Your filters look good. Per the same link referenced above - Common device filters include redbook, partmgr and imapi. Redbook and imapi are usually found on CD/DVD drives, for audio and burning within Windows. The Partmgr is the partition manager for the harddisks.

Have you checked Device Manager (Right Click My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager) for any errors - yellow !'s in any area?

Did you try Matt's suggestions of a System Restore to a time PRIOR to the issue?

"Have you checked Device Manager (Right Click My Computer -> Manage -> Device Manager) for any errors - yellow !'s in any area?"

Yes there are several:

DVD 39
Multimedia Audio 28
Raid Controller 28
Plug and play Software Device Enumerator 39

"Did you try Matt's suggestions of a System Restore to a time PRIOR to the issue?"

Yes didn't work.

"Try this fix: Restore CD/DVD Drives to Explorer"

Didn't work.

"sfc = System File Checker restores files to their correct state.

Requires CD which unfortunately didn't work because the CD drive isn't working.

The fact that the sound and DVD went at the same time makes me think something out of the ordinary has happened.
