the other day i was on veoh.com and downloaded some videos onto my laptop. during the download a message appeared and said that i had reached my download limit. so i began to delete some of the videos in order to keep others downloading. this didnt work. no matter what i did the videos would not start downloading again. i even tried deleting all of them and restarting with just one download. it still would not work. when i tried to watch the video on the website none of them will play and no error message appears. the same thing happens with youtube and google videos. so i restarted my comp and an error message appeared:
\windows\prefetch\googleupdate.exe-2b16298f.pf
i restarted my comp again and let the chkdsk run but it froze at 3 percent and another screen appeared and told me to start safe mode. well i started it in safe mode but that froze too. i tried looking up help online but i cant find any help with this problem. please if you have any info help.

You haven't mentioned what you Operating System is - I am assuming XP. If you have your original XP disk and can get to Safe Mode with command prompt (I know that it locked up previously - maybe worth trying again), you could try to run SFC /SCANNOW to repair or replace missing system files.
More info on the SFC command: System File Checker A command-line utility called System File Checker (SFC.EXE) allows an Administrator to scan all protected files to verify their versions. System File Checker can also set the registry value SFCScan discussed in "Additional Registry Settings" later in this article. System File Checker will also check and repopulate the %Systemroot%\system32\dllcache directory. If the dllcache directory becomes corrupted or unusable, SFC /SCANNOW, SFC /SCANONCE, SFC /SCANBOOT, or SFC /PURGECACHE can be used to repair the contents of the dllcache directory. SFC.exe scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions. The following shows the syntax: SFC [/SCANNOW] [/SCANONCE] [/SCANBOOT] [/CANCEL] [/QUIET] [/PURGECACHE] [/CACHESIZE=x] /SCANNOW Scans all protected system files immediately. If you are not able to access Safe Mode at all, I would have to suggest that you perform a REPAIR of your Operating System. Please see the below MSKB URL for additional information. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/doug92.mspx This site has additional information about using the REPAIR command. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Have you found a way into Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking? In order to scan for malware, you've got to have some entry into the computer.
If you have found a way into your system, please follow the link to PreWork in my signature, review the document and post the requested logs. Be sure to UPDATE Malwarebytes PRIOR to selecting FULL scan. If you can't get into your system, would it be possible for you to borrow a CD of the version of XP installed on your PC from a friend? As long as YOU have a legal key for the operating system, it doesn't matter where the disk comes from as long as it's the same version as what is installed.

If you can access another PC, use it to gain access to Microsoft's website and download a Windows XP CD. You just need a valid serial #. After that, burn the file(s) to a CD or DVD and boot off of it on your non-working PC. Then you can use the Automated System Recovery (ASR) and/or Recovery Console (RC). Or you can just re-install the OS. See if this helps...
