Default XP "Folder options > Advanced" data missing

Greetings,

First of all I'd like to thank you for being here, every one from every level of experience. I just joined after spending the day reading several articles and trying everything possible to help myself, but unfortunately they have yet to pan out for me. Let me explain...

Can anyone help me reset the Windows XP "Folder options" so they work normally again?

Location: Tools, folder options, file types, file folder, advanced...
Problem: No options and/or no EDIT button for selected options when they are present.

I had to use the CREATE NEW option and place "Explore.exe" as option to open folders and drives, but it's not working well at all. I get the basic Explore.exe program up and running, yes... but I can go around resetting all my folders however I wish (IE: How I used to have them) by the usual "Tools, folder options" settings, but as soon as I close it back down again it's all "undone" and messed up again, back to the basic Explore.exe preset that I really hate (even if it is semi-functional). Simply directing to Explore.exe is apparently not enough to fix this over-all problem to get the computer back to there it was upon installation.

After reading the following links, your advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks kindly.

This did not fix my problem: http://www.pchelpforum.com/windows-x...options-3.html
Ref also: Search Companion Starts If You Double-Click a Folder

This also did not work: http://www.pchelpforum.com/windows-x...ociations.html

Have already run this a few times and all's well: http://www.pchelpforum.com/windows-x...1-sfc-exe.html

I also have just run: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.32
One minor thing removed... unrelated. My machine is very clean and well maintained. Good program, btw.

Thanks again.

Hi Reptoid - Welcome to PCHF!!!

Please try the fix in the link below to restore all your file associations back to windows default.

After you have done this go into folder options > select the View tab > make sure there is a tick in Remember each folders view settings.

Easy File Associations

Please post back if this doesn't fix your problem.

Sadly, no. Did as requested and result is "no change" in initial situation.

Scientifically speaking this is one success after another, because we're all learning what doesn't work. Now I'm really starting to wonder what's wrong with this thing. Is it possible since all other previous tricks have all failed that it's nothing to do with file associations at all even though it looks and acts that way? Obviously it's not a virus, trojan, malware, etc, but some kind of error or missing file direction somewhere... but where? Something went missing somewhere and my pointing folders to "explore.exe" is a lousy band aid solution so far. Again see first posting for all other tricks of the trade already attempted... I'm stumped on this one. The mystery continues.

Thanks for the warm welcomes also. Much obliged.

I'm honestly not sure if the fix below will work - as it's only meant to restore the tabs if they're missing but it couldn't hurt to try it.

Missing tabs in Folder Options dialog box in Windows XP

Please ensure you make a backup of the registry before trying the fix in the link. The quickest and easiest way to do this is to create a restore point.

To do this:
Click Start > Run
at the prompt type: c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui
Click OK
or
Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

If I may, I have some screen captures nicely edited together with text included explaining what we are looking at together and what's going on. I am pretty sure the previous suggestion is not the case because I have full access to those buttons, no problem, but the other ones after that in the "advanced" department, those are a "no go" still, not to mention anything I "save" using the basic folder options still doesn't work properly. Would anyone like these screen captures? (I saved them as GIFs)

Hello again Reptoid!

Yes, go ahead and post those .gifs. They very well could shed some light on this situation.
