I did. It seemed to go fine, with no complications.

The chkdsk box closed itself without asking me to do anything/telling me of any problems. Is that normal?

Yes that is normal, now i'll do some research while we are waiting for the error/message to come back.

In command prompt type chkkdsk /r

Sorry for jumping in snoopy.

It appears to be an issue with any storage devices such as hard drives internal and external,CD/DVD rom, floppy and so on.

You may benefit from downloading new hardware drivers.

HP Compaq nx6325 Notebook PC- Download drivers and software - HP Business Support Center

Now people asume that downloading and running a driver update means it is installed. That is just not the case. Some do install some do not.

Once downloaded all the relevent hardware drivers I would then open device manager and right click and choose update driver. This then will hopefully ensure the driver did install.Time consuming I know but it may resolve the issues. If the error occurs using external devices then update all items in USB section and such things as network.Update all storage hardware.

I would also power off the computer and check internal connections are fully seated.

Hi,

I did what you said above. So far, the error doesn't seem to have resurfaced, but time will tell, I guess.

Thanks for your help.

Also, my PC experiences haven't yet stretched to opening up the laptop or anything like it. Is this straightforward to do, or am I better off paying a pro to do it for me?

Thanks again.
