Question Windows Explorer acting strange

Hello PCHF,
Lately I have been experiencing some trouble within Windows Explorer.

When I right click a file, there can sometimes be a huge delay before the sub-menu comes up. If I try to do anything else while waiting, the computer is unresponsive, sometimes to the point of locking up entirely.

The other day when the pc locked up, some strange sounds were emanating from the case, not the sounds I have normally heard from others that would signal a hard drive failure, but I suppose I could be on the verge of one.

Does anyone know what could cause this?

Thank you in advance for your help. You always come through for me PCHF.

Hi cb,
have you defragged recently, that may speed things up. You could also download and run Ccleaner that will clear out the rubbish that's accumulated on your HDD, which will also help.
It's possible that you are on the verge of a HDD failure but not necessarily so

I have defragged recently, and I regularly run ATF-Cleaner, and use the cache cleaner utility within Zone Alarm Security Suite.

I'll give CCleaner a try and report back.

Thanks driver_ian.

Do you put the PC on Sleep/Hibernate/Stand-by?

Hi jay2,
Thanks for your reply.

No, I don't use Sleep/Hibernate/Stand-by.

Hey cb,
Can I mark as resolved or do you require more help on this subject?
