Are you able to open the side of the computer carefully while running and see if the fans are all spinning?
I am, and will. I can hear at least one fan running as we speak.

When was the last time you cleaned the computer internals fully while powered off?
A couple of weeks ago. All I usually do is blow it out with canned air, while holding the end of a vacuum nozzle nearby, without touching the nozzle to anything. Not the best method, but not sure how else to do it. I touch the case frequently to discharge static. I need to get one of those static bracelets.

FYI, this computer has built in diagnostic software, which I ran recently, and passed all tests. I ran the extended tests, which are also interactive. Took quite a long time.

Believe it or not, I have an extended hardware warranty, which is still in effect, maybe I should call Dell. Do I need to brush up on my Hindi? Just kidding, the Indian techs are usually very helpful, and friendly, in my experience.

Sorry, I didn't think it was a hardware problem, and it still may not be. They will probably just run the internal diagnostics, which are checking out as of now.

Dell won't help me if it's Windows, which it still could be.

That's why I come here.

I was skeptical about the Speed Fan hdd temp reading, so I did a little experiment.

I shut down the computer for a couple of hours, restarted it, as soon as everything booted up I opened the Speed Fan app. It read 36 degrees centigrade. After about 10 minutes of uptime, it now reads 45 degrees centigrade.

It seems the original reading of 54 for my internal hdd may very well be accurate.

I apologize if I wasted your time Jelly Bean, I appreciate all your help.

I will call the manufacturer tonight.

Thanks again,

cb

That is still to hot for that hard drive.

You have not wasted my time at all.

Are your fans all spinning internaly?

I know you say you can hear one but that may be just the CPU fan.

I will continualy help you with this as much as I can.

I just would not to get into trouble if helping would void your warrantee.

Sooooo fans,check,please.

He?????????????????

I is a SHE,he he he.

Hello Jelly Bean,
I know you're a girl, we met some time ago, and, I've seen your picture.
Did I accidentally refer to you as a he?

Anyhoo, if 36c is still hot, would the hdd heat up that fast? That reading was no more than one minute after turning the computer on after a 2 hour down time.

Checked the fans, I can find two, both are spinning.

1. Large fan at front of case.

2. Smallish fan at top rear of case.

Thanks,

cb

I just checked the Western Digital website, and the max operating temp for my hdd is 55c.

Speed Fan says it's currently running at 54c.

That is bad, correct?
