Default Windows XP 6 digit ID PIN for OEM

I bought mine through ebay as OEM. I was told I have to ph Microsoft to reinstall it. Microsoft asked me for my 6 digit ID pin and I didn't know what it was. I have lost my original disk and instructions but still have backups and I know the product key and took note of a couple of other number/letter sequences that were on the original packet but these weren't six digit numbers.

I took my pc to a shop for them to reinstall windows because I was having problems reinstalling it. My pc kept asking to re-boot. They said I could not prove I had original Windows XP disk without the original disk itself but that they can install it and I can put in the product key later.

Is not having the 6 digit ID pin that big a problem?

Should I buy another Windows XP to get the ID PIN and original disk, and if so, where/how do you find out what the ID PIN is?

You're not the only one. I've been working with XP for 8 years and haven't come across the 6 digit PIN before....

How to activate Win XP either over the net, or by phone.

You will need your Product ID which is located on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker.

How to activate Windows XP

Sounds like someone doesn't know what they are talking about on the phone. Like everyone else 6 digit pin?

Install your OEM windows, activate it by typing in your CD-key, usually if the activation is fine it will go through, if not you could run into a problem such as CD-key has been used too many times. Although i had a CD that did this and i just do a reinstall and activated over the internet with no problems... Call the people up and state I'm trying to activate my windows, its stating blah blah, i just installed a new motherboard and CPU in my computer which caused me to format and now I'm getting this message, at this point in time they usually ask for that long number you see on your screen after punching in your CD-key when you activate. and they replace it with a new one. end of story... 6 digit pin?

When activating via phone you are asked to key in seven or nine(cannot remember off hand) a set of 6 digit numbers using your key pad on your telephone and press the hash key? Then you are rquested for the next set followed by hash and so on.When you have finished they will then give you a set of numbers and letters to input for the activation to work.

This is an automated service,if after several attempts your set of 6 digit numbers fail you will be put through to a actual speaking person.

They will then try to activate windows.

If this fails they will then give you a tech line to ring. This tech helpline will then sort you out with activation or a new free windows key code.

The issue may just be simply you have activated this version of windows over a certain limit and now you need Microsoft Tech line to help activate it.
