I have Windows 2000 Pro and I wanted to do a fresh install of Windows XP Pro. I put the disk in, and it booted from the cd. I got to the part where it asked me in which partition I wanted to install XP in or if I wanted to create or delete one. All other options wouldn't let me go further so I continued with the current and only partition there was. But now I have both Win2000 Pro and WinXP Pro. I only want XP. The setup didn't give me an option to format my hdd either. How do I get only the XP OS?

Alienware,
Welcome to PCHF. You can just delete that partition. The partition you saw was the current Operating System. After you migrate your data you can just delete it via the same screen you were describing Crush

I tried deleting the current partition, but it said that it couldn't because that partition has some files that are needed for the installation.

How big is the partition? There should be multiple ones:
Your old OS with all your files, music, pictures, etc. on it The System partition which has the files needed to run the OS (you dont want to delete this one! There also may be more than one)

There were two that were listed. One was of 38 gigs that had about 32 gigs of space left, and another one was 8 megs. I think the 38 gig one was the one that had my current OS. The one that is 8 megs was the only one that gave me an option to create a new partition, but it would not let me because that one said it had files needed for the installation.
Since I couldn't create a partition in the 8 meg one, and I couldn't delete the 38 gig one, I pressed "install" on the 38 gig. Those were the only ones listed. |

I am still lost as to what I should do. I'll try to boot from the cd again.
