Default System file corrupt

My Dell XPS 400 has just started giving me this message at startup: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I have tried using the windows cd to repair the files but whenever I hit r for repair, the recovery console says it can't find my hard drive. I have no floppy drive so I can't supply the driver to the recovery console.

I have used the diagnostic program to test the hard drive and it passes all the tests.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried downloading the UBCD4WIN app once before and got a corrupted file. I will give it another shot tonight.
