Hey all.
I have a dell Dimension Desktop that is approx 7 years old, running XP sp3
and it is Still fast except for one little problem.
When I power off my puter, It takes about a minute and a half to shut down.
It is "saving my settings"
It used to power off in a few seconds.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what is wrong?

Hello and welcome to the forum
you could try running Ccleaner available from here CCleaner - Home THat may speed things up a bit.

I'll also mark this as open to encourage a response from the clever ones that hide within the forums and I'll also move your thread to the correct part of the forum which may help to get you a speedier resolution to this problem

Hello there and welcome to the forum.

Firstly how much free space is on the hard drive?

Run CCleaner as Ian sugested.

Could you go to "User CP" and fill out your computer specifications and check box show others please, this can aid in helping you.

Click start/open run box and type in cmd and hit enter/then copy and paste this in to the command box window chkdsk /r and hit enter on your keyboard if you get a cannot run now type in Y and hit enter on your keyboard if command prompt doesnt close type exit and hit enter.

Restart your computer and ley chkdsk run.Let me know if it finds any errors and fixes them please.

Thanks for responding to my post Jellybean.
I have an 80 gig harddrive and it is 80% free with approx 600Megabyte of free memory.
I ran a chkdsk a couple of days ago and nothing wrong turned up.
I installed a piece of software called Super fast reboot and that cut the shutdown time to about 40 seconds but as I stated in my first post, It used to take only around 10 seconds.
I am very careful with sites and have never gotten a virus or bug as far as symantic reports.
So, any other suggestions?
Regards
powcon

Hey there,Ok a computer can take time to shut down.

Why?When we install software such as antivirus program,MSN/Yahoo and many other programs we like to use or have to use this will slow down the shut down and startup processes.

Inturn each program has to be shut down via windows turn off process.

Try shutting down your antivirus program and such items as yahoo/MSN,IE and all other not essential programs that realy are not needed to run windows before you click start/turn off, shut down.

Then see if the computer shuts down quicker.

Also while in windows click start/open run box/type in run box msconfig and hit ok button.

In startup proccess tab uncheck some items not required for startup.Again this could be your antivirus,MSN/Yahoo,Nero,windows media player and maybe a few others. You can also include your printer,Skype, scanner,Windows defender.

Then restart the computer and see if it boots up quicker also.

I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit and it appears slow to shut down, but if I exit such things as AVG8 and Windows Defender first then click turn off my computer will shut down a lot quicker.

When a user shuts down Windows XP, first the system has to kill all services currently running. Every once in a while the service does not shut down instantly and Windows gives it a chance to shut down on its own before it kills it.

This amount of time that Windows waits is stored in the system registry. If you modify this setting, then Windows will kill the service earlier. To modify the setting, follow the directions below:

1. Start Regedit, by going to Start / Run paste in regedit
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
3. Click on the "Control" Folder.
4. Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
5. Right click on it and select Modify.
6. Set it to a value lower than 2000

I have my Win XP sp3 set on 350
