Default Issues With Device Manager and External Hard Drive

Hello all,

I recently received a 250 GB Western Digital MyBook USB HD for an early Christmas gift

I promptly put Ubuntu 8.10 on it formatting it for ext3 and allocating the entire drive or the OS's use. I now want to reformat it and do some more editing to the partitions so I can format another partition for NFTS so I can use it as a mass storage device.

However, I do not see it as an external drive on my Windows install. I looked in Device Manager which yielded some puzzling things. I have attached a screenshot to shed some light on what I am talking about. Could this be my issue?

The machine I am having this issue with is a:

Dell XPS M1210
XP Professional SP3
Intel Core 2 Duo T2400
80 GB SATA HD
Bios revision A08

All updates have been downloaded and I am Malware free

I have marked my thread as Open *glances at JB* so fellow tech staff have at it!

Thanks,
Crush

EDIT: apparently the uploading failed so I will try to describe the device manager issue.

I have two devices that are under the Other Devices heading labeled Base System Device which have the update driver yellow exclamation point.

Try uploading your graphic to Media Fire and grabbing the share link to put here.

Be interested in seeing the problem...

No need to bow to me Crush, I'm just another lowly worker in the pecking order.

I have found this that may be of help I think.

Microsoft Windows* Device Manager may show "Base System Device" with a exclamation mark on a yellow question mark, even after installing drivers.

Intel® Server Board S5000VSA - "Base System Device" shows error in Device Manager

Now I have had a look around and this might not be the right way of fixing this. I will keep looking around...

Jabs Jelly Bean with a blunt stick as well...

In the device properties for that Base System Device, right mouse click and select Properties and go to the details tab.

Look up the VEN (vendor ID) listed in that tab on this site: PCI Vendor and Device Lists

Edit: I got this from here.

From some other sites, people are suggesting it's a card reader driver as well.

Arctos,

Looks like the Vendor ID is 1180.

a lookup on that site you gave me yielded these results:

0x1180
0x1093National Instruments 0x3149SATA RAID Controller0x1106VIA Technology 0x0805SD Card Controller0x1179Toshiba America Info Systems 0x1000XaQti 1000Mbit/sec Gbit Ethernet Controller0x13D8Phobos Corporation 0x4301Dell Truemobile 1180 802.11b MiniPCI0x14E4Broadcom Corporation
Below is the screenshot of where I got the vendor ID. Is that what I needed?
