My mates are still a bit full of turkey and traveling back from Thanksgiving day stuff still at the moment.

A suggestion one of them says to try, is search for any Ricoh entries in the registry and delete them, as he suspects it is a renegade leftover registry entry.

He also said to try Regseeker to find things like that as it finds all the entries at one time and gives the option to delete them.

I got one renegade registry item with that program. Thanks Don. Let's see if that does the trick. Also, any ideas about my external HD issue? Intertwined with the Ricoh issue?

A member here at PC Help Forum, Lurkswithin came up with this when I emailed out this morning as well.

I think he has 2 seperate issues going.

1) I think that his problem is that he is looking for the wrong product. The Ricoh host controller might be the the Ricoh R5C832 - which turned out to be the driver for the in-built SD card reader. Have the OP go here:

Drivers & Downloads

and look under the chipset drivers..there are 2 of them and he needs the Ricoh!

Now Dell has had some issues about restoring their products and then installing the drivers in a special order or it causes some issues similar to what the OP has.

From a Dell technical Analyst

"The order of the drivers is somewhat important when reloading an OS. Try reinstalling with a fresh image then the first driver to be loaded should be the NSS (Notebook System Software).

It's important that these be loaded first as the carry updates and patches for your Dell computer.

Next, install the Chipset driver, followed by the video driver, then the sound driver, and finally the network drivers. The remaining drivers can be loaded in any order.
I hope this one is the cure for this base device thingy, it's a deviant device...

Installed the driver and it fixed it!!

However my drive is still not showing up in My Computer. The device plug in "ding" sound thing (don't you love my explanation? ) goes off and the HD has power. I can feel it working. It's just not showing up.

Is this because it's formatted as ext3? Any suggestions as to how I can reformat it?

A big yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy for Lurkswithin.

I'm glad that helped you Crush.

It could be that it's ext3 format, I can't remember when I dual booted a windows linux combo. I don't think the partition showed up at all.

I use GParted to partition and format drives in different formats, it has all the major flavours to pick from.

Download the iso to burn as a live linux cd from here.

GParted -- Live CD/USB/PXE/HD

Read the manual and docs from here.

I am glad the fix worked for you! Even happier that you reported that it did work!

Arctos is correct that the ubantu system may not be seen. as it is an unfamiliar formatting to windows.

For the HDD issue , You might look under disc management and see if the drive shows up there. It should but may show as to be unformatted. In which case you can reformat it from there by finding the drive in the lower screen and right clicking on the space and choosing format. The formatting will wipe the Ubantu OS out and you will then be able to create new partitions or what ever.

start > R. clk My computer and choose manage > disc management

Arctos agrees: Great advice mate...
