I have a desktop pc running XP pro service pack 3 and the system just keeps freezing randomly. It has no relation to what i am doing, either running a scan or browsing the internet. It can work for hours without any problems or it can be a matter of minutes. i have to switch the pc off and boot it back up to correct. the task manager will not come up and it will not respond to any other commands when it freezes.

I have checked for a virus but my up to date AVG does not detect anything.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like the PC may have faulty RAM (Memory) do you know have many sticks of RAM are in the PC?

Yes check out the ram, maybe its even loose

well I was going to suggest if you have 2 try removing one and if it freezes still put it back in and remove the other one and see if it freezes and you will no which one is faulty

OK, i was thinking a possible HW issue as it does the same in safe mode. i will check the RAM as i have not done this yet.

If the RAM is good could it be the bios, i have checked and there is an update available?

it will be ram or graphics card if you have one thats not onboard other wise ram for sure
