I have Win XP Home, version 5.1.2600, Service pack 2, Build 2600 on a Dell Dimension 4400.
When I right click my desktop and select properties nothing happens. In my control panel there's no display icon. When I try to add/remove windows components from control panel add/remove programs I get specific error code 0x7e. (No idea what that means.) My windows help area appears to be empty, no index, search returns nothing. I tried to reinstall Windows XP with my CD but it won't because it says the version on my computer is newer than the version on my CD.
Obviously my XP has gotten corrupted or lost pieces or something.
This hasn't been an important problem until just now I bought a flat panel LCD monitor and the resolution is all wrong for it. Other than that it works pretty good.
Help. Any ideas?
Thanks much.
Rick

Hi Joey,
What video driver? I haven't put any new video driver on the computer since I bought it ~ 5 years ago. The new monitor didn't come with any video driver. And I know the problem started before I bought this monitor, a Samsung T190. Rick |

try this:
Start - Run - type: sfc /scannow (with the space) sfc = System File Checker and puts back critical Windows files to their original state. In Control Panel, System - what does it say you have installed & what version is written on your XP CD

Also if we're going to get this right, now would be a very good time to backup all your critical data.

The sfc /scannow ran for a few minutes and then came back and said files that are required to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your CD-ROM now. When I did that it came back with a Windows File Protection pop up window that said possible reason for this problem is different windows product CD than the version installed.
My system says I have version 2002 service pack 2 build 2600. In another place it said 5.1.2600. The CD isn't clear about version. It says it's a reinstallation CD - only use this CD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell computer. There's a copyright 2996-2001 Dell corp and 1985-2001 Microsoft. It also says P/N 7K404. |

Hello,
HINT,your XP CD must have sp1 on it that is the issue you are having.Your computer has SP2 installed. What is the make and model of your graphics card? Try this for your windows error:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898594/
