Unhappy Ntldr

When I turn on my computer their is a message on the black screen saying "NTLDR is missing". It tells me to Ctrl/Alt/Del to start, but I did that and it doesn't work. I think there is a possibility that I deleted this....whatever it is. Can this be fixed without taking it to a computer store? Thanks for your help. (I have a Dell and use Windows XP 2000 Home Edition)

Do you have an original XP CD disk?
(I'm not sure what Dell supplied you with...)?

If not can you get one from friends or family.

Boot from that disk, take the Recover Console option. You will end up with a C: prompt

type the following where d: is your CD drive
copy d:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy d:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

Late thank you. Couldn't come up with the C:/ prompt. Too much detail to go into so will have to call a computer man I think. Thanks anyway. Kat

Hello Fewcat and welcome to PCHF.
Hello elpmek.

I think you might have a serious hard drive problem, so if you call a Technician, ask him if he can perform HDD Regenerator, and see are there any bad sectors. You may lose all your data.

If it has bad sectors my suggestion is to think about new HDD and clone the older one.

Wish you luck !
