Default Carying Laptop (cold weather)

This winter, I'll need to bring my laptop to school. so I've bought a nice laptop bag, but I'm fearing to break the laptop when it gets under 20 celcius or more, because I'll need to walk for 25 minutes at that weather. Therefore, I thought myself, "hey, why don't you leave your laptop in stand by mode, so when you walk outside it won't have the time to get cold, thus you won't need to wait for it to warm up back to room temperature before turning it back on."

By the way, there does not seem to be any vent or noise when my laptop is in standby mode, so I dont think this will be subject to break the laptop down.

Secondly, Ive just learned that in standby mode the HDD is still running, so Im fearing that knocking a HDD over something has a lot more of chances of breaking it if it's running than if it's turned off. So I think that, instead of clicking shut down~turn off -> then stand by, Ill instead have to put it in stand by mode by waiting until the laptop power scheme gets triggered, so the HDDs get turned off and that way there are less chances of losing data.

What do you think about all this?

N.B. this topic started from the Standby mode & HDDs thread

thanks. :)

My friend has had his laptop for most of this year and he jsut keeps it on in his bag. He's had no problems with data loss or anything. You just have to be a little careful when carrying it. But let's be honest, you're gonna be careful with a laptop be it on or off. Just leave it on standby, it'll be fine.

Did you really mean under 20 Celsius?

If that's your tough time can I come & live where you do?

Ah!... you missed off the minus.

Ok - that's cold - I'd agree standby mode should work. I suggest the only problem that could ever occur is going from very cold to working, with the resultant thermal "shock".

If really worried carry it in one of those "Cool boxes" which will keep the cold out.

Wrap it in a towel, then wrap it in aluminum foil. It will keep it nice and cozy warm.

I suggest you also move from where it gets that cold as well...
