Default Two copies of Windows XP

Due to a nasty virus, I recentlyt had to use my recovery disc to re-install Windows XP Proffesional. Both copies show on boot up, the new being the default. The first listed is the good one, the second is the infected version. How can remove the the old (infected) version?

Thanks in advance~

This thread may solve your problem. Only attempt this if you are comfortable editing these kinds of files, though.

Clam before you do anything could you logon to windows and check what size partition the new OS is installed on please?

The simplest way to rid your self of this dual boot option is to set first boot device to CD rom put in XP CD save and exit.Follow instructions on the screen, delete both OS,s and create a new partition and format as you would normaly.

If you have no files to save this is the simplist option.

Thanks for the responses. The fixes seem a bit too technical for my experience level, however I may get brave and attempt one.

Also, will the fix remove the infected version from my hard drive (only one), or just remove it from the boot screen? I need the memory space.

Take Jelly Bean's solution, you'll end up with a totally new Windows installation - no infections
