Default Folder Options

Hello,

this may sound a little bit confusing as its quite difficult to explain so apologies.

i wanted to use command prompt and wasnt sure how to get the specific directory on it. therefore i followed the following instructions on a website:

LINK WAS INFECTED WITH TROJAN, REMOVED LGW

now what has happened is when i double click on a folder, the command prompt box appears where as it should open like a normal folder. i think this is probaly because i done the action (from the above website) abit wrong. i edited the wrong file type, instead of Folder, i edited File Folder.

Im not sure on how to delete it so i can open a folder as normal instead of right clicking and the clicking open.

can anyone help me? if any ones got questions or unsure what i mean, please ask.

thanks in advance.

Alright, I have a quick fix for you but I'm not sure that it works, so I'll ask you to back up your registry key which I'm going to change so that if something happens you'll be able to restore it. Here's what I want you to do:
  1. Go to Start then click Run...
  2. Type regedit in the box and press Enter.
  3. In the tree to the left, double-click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
  4. Quickly type "fol" with your keyboard to quickly focus on the Folder key.
  5. Right click the Folder key and click Export...
  6. Give it a file name and place to save and click ok
Now that you've backed up the registry key, I want you to download this registry key that will try and fix the problem and run it. You'll be asked to confirm that's what you want to do, accept the confirmation.

Why not just Remove the entry that you put in for Folders? Set Default to Open.

hi. yes ive tried to delete that entry but it wont allow me to. as ive put this entry into the 'File Folder' not the 'Folder', there is no open entry in the 'file folder' therefore i cannot change it to the default. when i change the 'open' to default in the 'folder', it still has the command prompt as the default.

to dokueki:
im not that advance in computers therefore do not want to do anything that might mess up my computer. if i do follow your intructions, is there anychance of something going wrong on my computer?

Thanks

Default Re: Folder Options

I've just checked my options in Type "file folder" and "find" is the only option there. Is it possible to set "find" as your default possibly resolving your issue?

Hey Guys,

@ All that link has a Trojan Horse set up as a requested Active X component. Link has been removed.

@ Dok, it's always a better idea when having someone back up their registry to back up the entire thing, just in case

@ DC, it's actually even easier than that M8, .

@ Bob, my personal welcome to PCHF. However, you must learn to be more careful with posting links and following tips , exposing others to infection is a very uncool way of introducing yourself to a community. You are, ontop of having the folder issue, infected with malware. Once you have finished following these instructions. Please follow the instructions for PreWork in my signature, and we will have the Security Team guide you through the disinfection process.

Please right-click on My Computer and choose Explore. Click on Tools, Folder Options. Click on the File Types tab, navigate to File Folder click the Advanced button, and remove the cmd.exe /k "cd %L entry. Unless you have Windows 2007, you should not have any other entry other than find left in your File Folder menu of Open's With. Reboot your PC and you should be back to normal.

We look forward to your reply,

TTFN
