Hi, I recently replaced my motherboard and I need to reinstall Windows. Unfortunately I did not plan on my old motherboard dieing, so I have nothing backed up. Is there a way to keep my old data from Windows so I can transfer it to my new install? I cannot currently get into Windows due to my new motherboard. I guess, is there a way to split the old partition in half (without having to log into Windows)or something so I can make a new install without deleting the old one? Thanks
you SHOULD be able to boot into safe mode, even with a new motherboard. If not, you can download and burn an Ubuntu/UBCD4Win disc, and use these to copy your files to a USB hard drive (available for under $100 at Walmart etc). If Safe Mode boots, just plug in the USB hard drive, and copy the entire contents of your "Documents and Settings" folders to the external drive. Unless you have data stored in an odd location, this should copy everything you'll need with your new install.
I would suggest getting the largest external drive you can afford, and use it for regular backups. I keep two of them in my fire safe, as well as backing up regularly online, and to other computers.
