Hi my son has done several full formats including mbr. Then clean XP Pro installations then he installs his virus checker then starts downloading the updates and each time he gets so far then during a restart which he does with each download his pc hangs and he can not recover or get into windows. I remember there used to be a trojan or something like that that was hard to get rid of so much so that microsoft posted a fix for it on their site but I cannot remember what it was called . Oh my silly son didnt write down what the downloads were he can only remember that it started with a k.
All help would be really apprieciated. thank you
sonya

Hi Sonya,My personal welcome to PCHF. May I please ask you a few more questions before we assume that it is that particular virus? When your son does the formatting, is he using the format tool on XP or is he doing it manually? Prior to downloading his virus checker, does he have any difficulty with XP? Is he making sure to disable the virus checker before installing the updates to XP? What is the virus checker he is using? Over the numerous times he has done this, has he noticed a particular dowload that seems to cause the hang? Is he getting any type of error message or blue screen of death? This information may better help us help you figure out the cause of the problem. Looking forward to your reply, TTFN LGW

Go here and download Darik's Boot and Nuke, then burn the image file to a cdr. Then disconnect the computer from the web. Follow the instruction on the site to the letter and it will wipe the hardrive clean, which will get rid of all the data on the disk including any nasties that may be hiding in hard to reach spots. When it's done it's thing, use the Windows XP disk to partition and format the harddrive again. When XP is installed, you can then install your antivirus / firewall apps and trusted malware programmes. Then reconnect the computer to the internet, update the security software definitions. Then get all Windows updates... Darik's Boot And Nuke | Hard Drive Disk Wipe
