Default Nvidia driver problem

Hello everyone,

I have a problem and was wondering if anyone else has had this before.

First off, my computer is old.

Pentium 4 2.60 GH
1 gig ram
Win XP service pack 1
Nvidia GeForce 7800 (AGP)

The problem I am having I think is with the video drivers.

To start, my computer just crashed yesterday so I did a full system restore (which I have done before). Usually this fixes all major problems. When I get it back up and running, I usually go to the nvidia site and download the drivers to get the graphics card working again. I did that, but this time when I re-booted it was stuck in 4-bit color mode with with 800X600 resolution and I can't change it (because there are no other settings). I attempted to go into the Nvidia program in the Control Panel to troubleshoot but the .exe won't launch. Unfortunately I don't have the cd that cam with the graphics card anymore. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all my nvidia drivers but that still does nothing. I'm at my wits end here can anyone help?

Hi... Welcome to PCHF

First thing I would suggest-is run Windows update... you are still running SP1-- there have been many fixes since then that could affect driver installations (and many other issues).
Nvidia's newest drivers have to be written for at least SP2 if not SP3-- so the installer's looking for files that are not there.
If you look at my specs above-- we are running the same Processor

You're welcome... Regular updates are important -- both for functionality -- and security of your PC

Marked as fixed
