Default W2K errors generated by windows

Windows 2000 PRO almost anything I try to run gets a gray error box saying: xxx.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. This happens for apps like winword, to things like mmc, msth (whatever the add/remove programs exe is), etc. I don't think it's a virus or spyware as my programs didn't turn up much. I ran SFC (after I finally got it to run!) /clearcache and /scannow - neither helped. I've seen this problem before.. People write in when they get it on one exe.. but this is many.. There must be an answer. Help would be much appreciated. Maggie

The error code is exact as above.. xxx (almost any program I try to run).exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. This comes in an error box.. no codes.. It happens on things that are in the startup, like winzip quick pick (I forget the exact exe name), happens to winword.exe if you try to run word, happens to mmc.exe if you try to invoke anything from that, happens to the exe that is used for add/remove programs - msth.exe (I forget exactly that one as well), but basically anything/everything I try to run.. OS is W2K Pro SP4; Office 2000. I ran avg scan, and cleaned whatever was there and spyware terminator which found one invalid startup item and I removed thtat also. Also, when you first open IE it gets an error that it has to close, but then you can open it after that.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Maggie

Hi.. I should have included that I DID do a Repair of Windows 2000.. However, what I did was a tad different from what your site shows.. On the first screen where your site says to do ENTER (for install) I did R for Repair. Then there was another screen where I also did R again, which I think was the same as yours. Then it searched for a windows to repair and I told it to repair. It didn't exactly run the entire setup wizard again though.. I didn't have to enter the key again. Is this a lot different? It DID go through the screens that say setup is examining your disks and the one that says it's copying files to the installation folders.. and it then restarted the computer.. Is this "good enough" or is what your site said that much different? Thanks very much. Maggie
