Unhappy how do i get rid of lsass error?

How do i get rid of an error message appearing when i boot up Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 3)? The error message is lsass.exe Sytem Error, Object Name Not Found.
Sometimes i can get to the desktop, sometimes it just shuts down.
I have tried booting from the Win XP CD & running the Windows Repair & recovery procedure (chkdsk /R).
I have scanned the entire system for viruses (none found).

Is this really a virus or just Windows gone wrong?

The error message is still there - what else can i do? (other than putting the whole thing into the nearest garbage truck)
Martin.
