Default Windows 98 to XP Help.

I recently upgraded a friends computer from Windows 98 to Windows XP with SP2 already installed.

Everything works fine except during the installation of XP I notice that it did not copy some i384 files. The files for connecting to the internet and networking seems to be missing. I think the security center was missing too. Should I do a complete reinstall or should I get another Windows XP program that is not SP2?

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello try this:

Click start/run/type in box sfc /scannow hit ok.

Or try a repair install.Set first boot device to CD rom in BIOS put in XP install disk do not press R at first prompt just agree to license, etc. When prompted press R for a repair install.

Ok you seem to be missing some drivers for the internet connection hardware.Update drivers via device manager.Or download driver from computer manufacturers website for XP.You will proberly need a few driver updates.

You can also install extra XP components by logging on the the computer and put in XP CD and choose install optional components.

Was this a genuine copy of XP?Some times disks need a clean or become worn and the CD rom cannot read the disk fully or damaged XP CD.

I went with your last suggestion first. Clean CD and it worked. Thanks, you saved me a lot of time.
