This is a common problem with installing SP2 on some systems. It's caused by Registry Keys that SP2 needs to change having access restricted. Also Spybot S+D Tea Timer can cause this error if you have it active and so can some other anti-virus / antimalware programs. Make sure you have disabled all anti-virus, etc programs, then refer to the Microsoft Article below. It may take a few runs to find all the registry keys that you need to change permissions on.

You receive an error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1: "Access is denied"

Hi - I got the verbose logging and resulting logfile done. There are seemingly numerous repeats in the log. This may be a dumb question, but I need to know where to find the entries that start w/ c: in the registry. I fixed this one - #-007 Deleting registry key HKCR\vnd.ms.radio - Thanks for the help! Here's the list of 'Access is Denied' from the file:

6 hours, 4 install attempts - no luck. here is the latest logfile - I don't understand why things I've fixed revert - I've gone so far as to refix them after the install reverts to preinstall state. Problem seems related to DIIRE's link - haven't seen problem from Hengis' link... PLEASE HELP...

You need to change the permissions on HKCR\vnd.ms.radio. Right click it > Select Permissions > Click Advanced > Highlight Administrators > Click EDIT > Tick Full Control > Click OK > Tick Replace permission entries on child objects. Click Apply > Click OK > Click OK.

If you were unable to change the permissions (they were greyed out) let me know.

Did you try setting the security back to defaults using Method 2 in the link I gave you. If not try that. If it still doesn't work you will need to check the following in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update

Right click Auto Update folder - make sure Administrators group has full control.
