Unhappy Unmountable Boot Volume - Cannot Run Recovery!

Hi all,

I am experiencing a problem I hope you can solve.

When I turn on my Toshiba Satellite A65 it comes up with a screen saying that windows did not start successfully and offers the options of "safe
mode", "safe mode with networking" and "Safe mode with command prompt" and "last know good configuration". it also counts down to autostart in normal mode.

However, whichever option you choose it then goes onto a blue screen
with the following message:

a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
if this is the first time you have seen this error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps.
If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. if
you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your
computer, press F8 to select startup options, and then select safe mode.
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x000000ED (0x80E91E30,0XC0000032,0X000000000,0X000000000)

I have done some googling and found that the most common fix is to insert a windos xp disk and enter the recovery environment:

Windows XP Home Repair Guide
When I do that, the files for the recovery all load and a message appears for a few seconds at the bottom of the screen that says:

"Examining 57232 MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi..."

Then the message changes to:

"Examining Startup Environment"

After a moment the cpmputer restarts and I am back to the "windows did not start successfully screen."

In other words, it never gets the the part where it asks me which volume I want to repair.

(by the way..I also tried to boot the computer from a BartPE disk that I have. It also get as far as loading and running the startup screen of the environment, but then kicks back to the "windows did not start successfully screen.")

Any Ideas?

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

You are right to boot to covery console but while there do the chkdsk /r command to repair the volume. After you repair the volume, check your hardware to isolate the cause of the file system damage.

If this is the case, restart the computer to the Recovery Console, and then use the chkdsk /r command to repair the volume. After you repair the volume, check your hardware to isolate the cause of the file system damage.

To do this, follow these steps: 1.Start your computer by using the Windows startup disks, or with the Windows installation disk if your computer can start from the CD drive.2.When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option.3.If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.4.Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do this.

Note If no administrator password exists, press ENTER.5.At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER.6.At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer. If this procedure does not work, repeat it and use the fixboot command in step 5 instead of the chkdsk /r command.

Thanks for the quick reply Jelly Bean,

My problem arises at Step 3 of your suggestion. After selcting R for recovery, I get this message at the bottom of the screen:

"Examining 57232 MB Disk 0 at ID 0 on bus 0 on atapi..."

Then the message changes to:

"Examining Startup Environment"

I was afraid of that.

Luckily I have backed up all data on an external HD.

Do either of you know what my options are for a replacement hard drive?

I have the recovery/reinstallation disk for the computer, so I was hoping I could pop a new HD in and start back at day one.

Do I need to get the exact same HD, or do I have some options?

as long as everything is on the disc you should be fine if the recovery is on a partition you may be scuppered. Any correct format hdd will be fine. Use the same type ie Sata or Ide as the recovery will set boot peramiters for the correct location.(this can be fixed but it adds problems)
