Default Failed xp installation.

Hi I tried many times to install xp pro on my computer, at first I tried to do a repair installation but it gives a popup saying 'the file 'asms' on winxp pro service pk.2 is needed. When I tried to change the path which it was hightlighted my mouse or the tab key was not working it seem like hang. I tried to reboot again it appear the same popup box asking for it. Finally I decide to to do a fresh installation so with my xp cd I manage to run it after all the stages completed and start to reboot for the windows installation it automatically goes back to the windows setup page it repeat to the same page even I tried to make a new partition of it. Please do the needfull. Thanks. My OS. previous XP Pro.SP2.

when you get to the partition selection stage delete the partition/s you have installed windows on. There is a possiblity you have a corrupt MBR

Thanks for the reply. If I am not mistaken I did delete all the partition and let it format it again. As you mentioned it maybe the MBR giving problem if it is what should I do. As always I am stuck with the command key to enter, I am not well verse in Dos. Hoping to hear from you regarding this.

well if you deleted the partition the mbr would have been deleted and recreated with the new partition table

Are all the files copying over and it reboots or does it crash? have a look in bios and ensure the correct drive is set to boot first
