Smile Very Odd - XP Home & Professional

Helping a friend who has genuine XP Home SP2 Ver 2002 on a recent Dell PC which is what is shown in System in Control Panel.

Trying to sort some issues I run "sfc /scannow" which starts and immediately it asks me to put in an XP Professional SP2 CD to recover a DLL. It will not recognise the XP Home SP2 CD

The owner of PC has no idea what he may or may not have done.

Ideas/solutions please.........................

thanks

Hello,

Ok I asume he has XP home installed on his computer and then tried to sfc /scannow with XP pro CD?

XP Home and Pro do not mix.

It must be home=home and pro=pro CD.

Thanks for the reply, but sorry your assumption is wrong. We only have one cd = XP Home.

We don't understand why sfc is asking for an XP Professional CD

Yes I did - RUN - sfc /scannow

It all starts as per normal on any other PC I've ever done it on BUT this time it asks for an XP Professional SP2 CD to be inserted in the CD drive.

As stated previously it's an XP Home SP2 PC.

If I've missed something in stating what's going on please advise as I think I've made it reasonably clear.

My problem is of course I don't know what's really going on..........

(also done HJT, Spybot, SDfix, Smitfraud, but not Combofix ,cos I don't understand that one. - It's not a virusware)

Perhaps this is related?

"The file 'Asms' on Windows XP Professional CD-ROM is needed" error message when you install Windows XP
