You can try using data recovery software. Good software can read data off a damaged partition and formatted drives.

I recommend R-Studio but it's not free. You can download a trial of it to see what it is able to recover, then you can buy a licence and enter it straight away to recover the data.

I guess it depends how important their files are. R-Studio costs $50.00 See link below.

You can also try this free program but I have not used it so I don't know how good it is.
