Default XP boot to desk top fails

I have a computer running XP pro SP2. It will boot up normally and start loading windows, but then opens to a Windows logo screen and stops. It won't go to the login screen. Any suggestions?

Hello, are you able to restart the computer and repeatedly tap F8 and choose last known good config or safe mode and enter them?

ANYTHING I try in safe mode goes to the same Windows logo screen and then just sits there. (I think hear it laughing at me!)

He he.

Did you try last known good config?

Are you getting any error codes?Or does it just freeze and do nothing?

Was the computer acting slow or a little strange before this happened?

Have you recently installed new hardware or software?

Do you get any beep codes on startup besides single post beep?

I've tried using last know good config...same result. This isn't my computer, but the owner just installed a new linksys router for a satellite internet connection. I suspect this is the problem, but without getting it to boot up, I'm not sure how to go about fixing it.

Are you able to set first boot to CD/DVD rom and try boot off OS install disk?

It could be the router.

What OS is installed on this machine?
