no desktop, no start menue, just blue screen
After log in, I am getting blue screen. The icons does not load, no start icon, in one word: no desktop.
All that happen after I turned off the power with the power switch and not through the start menu. So, I guess, my desktop settings were not saved (that I read in one of the post on the forum, but it did not say how to fix the problem). I do not know if I am right. Could be something else. My 80 GB hard drive was full, but since, I deleted 40 GB and that is the free space now. Still no desktop.
I can open Windows task manager and connect to the Web and all my hard drives and folders and files.
What can I do? Please, help.
How do I get my desktop settings back? I think that is the problem.Thanks.

I went for the dump file, following your instructions. And here it is.

Re: no desktop, no start menue, just blue screen
Hi lobo - welcome to PCHF!!
Try the following to see if it helps.
In task manager > select the Applications tab > Select New Task > type: c:\windows\explorer.exe > Click OK.
You should hopefully have your desktop back now.
Now click Start > Run > Type: c:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui > Click OK
Try to restore your system back to before this problem started. Also if explorer.exe didn't work just type the above command into New Task on Task Manager to launch System Restore
If you can't restore please post back.

Re: no desktop, no start menue, just blue screen
Hello DIIRE.
Thnks.
The wellcome was exeptional. Impresive.
And now to my problem:
"In task manager > select the Applications tab > Select New Task > type: c:\windows\explorer.exe > Click OK."
Try it 3 times - it did not work. Still blue screen.
"Try to restore your system back to before this problem started."
I try it,but cannot go further than yesterday, so did not do it. I need to go back at least 2 weeks. Cannot change July,2008 to June,2008.
And now I am waiting for response. Thanks.

Hi Lobo...
You have not mentioned your operating system...XP,Vista?
Is this a "brand-name" PC ? If so, it should have come with a set of CD's for installed software.
Do you have a Firewall and Antivrus running?

Re: no desktop, no start menue, just blue screen
Try running chkdsk. From the Applications tab in task manager > Click New Task. type: cmd > Click OK
At the prompt type: chkdsk /r
Press Enter
It will ask you if you want it to run the next time the system restarts > Press Y
Type: EXIT > Press Enter.
Restart your PC. To do this press CTRL+ALT+DEL
Select shutdown - choose Restart from the list. The chkdsk will run when it reboots. This will take a while so just be patient. After it has completed hopefully Windows will boot normally.
If that doesn't work - if you have an original XP disc - not recovery discs try to do a repair install. You will not lose any of your data. To do a repair install see below:
In BIOS - set first device to CD drive. Insert XP disc.
When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.
Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.
In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

Re: no desktop, no start menue, just blue screen
Thanks a lot for the help.
Atter I run chek disk and it didn't work, it looks like one more thing left. And here I am coming to complet stop. I do not have disc. My new wife destroyed and throw in the garbage all my discs, pictures, etc from before. Incredible, eh. Unbeliveable. Attention everybody: NEVER merry a cuban. It is a nightmare. I can talk days about my experience, but no time for that. I have to fix my computer before she come back (she is visiting her mother, I hope she stay at least a couple of months}. When she is here, no much time for computer.
Anyway, what now, I feel like I am trap in a tunel, surrounded in darkness and just bumping into walls - not able to find an exit. No hard feelings ,if you run out of options.
Oh, OS is Windows XP pro, the firewall is disabled, the same for antivoirus. But I run Norton 360, Trend micro House call, Microsoft upgrades is turned off.
It looks, I am faceing new instalation - the last thiong I'd like to do. What else...?
Again thanks for the help.
The instructions were exelent.
