thanks for all the replies...I didn't get a chance to try them out yet... but I tried another video card (geforce 8600 gt) and worked, so I assumed it was my pci card that was defective so I went and bought a PCI-E card (geforce 8400) and now I'm getting the same problem...i'starting to think that it might be my motherboard thats defective...or maybe I could update the bios. I'll try all your suggestions but in the meantime, any ideas with the latest developpement concerning the video cards?

thanks everyone, it's finally working...it was the pci sound card that was the problem. I removed it and it's working fine.
