Depending on how accomplished you are at DOS commands, you could always download a bootdisk from here: Bootdisk.Com and then when you have booted to a C:\ prompt, copy the data to a membory stick or USB hard drive.
the hdd failed
If this is true then getting any data off of the drive will be nigh on impossible without specialist tools

This may sound off the wall to some like it did to me at first, but I tried it and it worked.

I had a *&^%$#@! Maxtor PATA-133 200GB HDD that stopped running. I did some Google research and found lots of recommendations to try putting the drive in the freezer for a day or so. I put mine in a ziplok bag and froze it. I had the side off one of my computers and a long IDE cable and power cord already connected. I took the drive out of the freezer, opened the end of the bag, connected the cables, and placed the drive into a bowl of ice cubes (no water). The drive worked long enough for me to use HDCopy v2.104 to extract all the data.

Its a great little trick to get them working Iv'e used it many times. but in your case I think you would be better of getting a usd hard drive enclosure and hooking it up to another PC to extract your data.
