Default WinXP says I'm low on temporary storage?

Hello,
I am running WinXP and the PC usually runs great, but if i'm doing something like playing a video or downlaod something after a certian period of time it will start to give me this message

"WARNING temoprary staorage has only 100MB remaining save your work and reboot your computer"

and I keep getting this over and over with the number 100MB shrinking 70,50 30,20,10, 5,...
untill finally the PC will freeze and I have to reboot.
What is temporary storage and why does this happen?
Thanks in advance

Just to be certain-- are you referring to the "Paging File" (virtual memory)
Or RAM (system memory).

The former is part of your harddrive set aside to use as RAM for times when you don't have quite enough available

I am thinking it's the paging file--

Thank you for the reply.

It says temporary storage so I thought it had to do with the temp folder?
I was hoping you could tell me what it was.
Here is a picture of the message.

I see in the background of that picture that you are running Google maps... it could be you are just low on RAM for what you want to do...
Right-click on "my computer" scroll down to properties-- under the General Tab-- what does it list for your processor-- it 's speed (how many ghz)
and how much RAM you have ?

Yes, this usualy happens when I am running many applications and after I have been on the PC for quite a while.

and how much RAM you have ?
Computer:
Intel(R)
Pentium(R)4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.79GHz 512 of RAM

Specs are not to shabby
