Cool Help! I know it's simple but I find it confusing

I get Error in loading Operating System on my daughter's computer --
It froze the last time it was on and had to have a hard shut down. When turned on it got the message Error in loading Operating System. I booted from cd and chose Repair. at C:/WINDOWS prompt I typed fixboot. and restarted. That did not solve the problem. so I started the same and started a fixmbr BUT after reading the warnings, I went no further. Help? is the what I need to do??? It is a Win XP Pro.

Whenever I have install probs with XP it's a memory error, have you checked your ram?

I had added a memory chip to it a couple of months ago and it was running fine.
I just removed them and tested them individually.--same results. "Error loading Operating System."
We have had some electrical brown outs and I am afraid her battery backup needs a new battery. but that doesn't explain why it would freeze and then not reboot.-- In my thinking. Still need help!

Can't get into safe mode. I get an image of a computer, I think, from my monitor then black until I get the message "Error loading operating system."
