Tried installing SP3 for XP -I get an access denied error.
Upon Googling found a tip, install a Subinacl.exe file ....
Well that did not work either.
Not sure but installing SP3 for Office 2000 may be the culprit.
Here's what I did.
I updated Ofc 2000 with SR-1, Sp2 and then the SP3 for Ofc 2000. What is odd, there are 12 entries of the SR-1 update for Ofc 2000 in my Add/Remove panel!.
Should I uninstall all of Ofc 2000 (and 97), then install Office 2007 (which I just bought), then try installing SP3 for windows??
Funny thing is- I was able to install SP3 for Windows with no problem a few days ago - before I updated Office)- well except then I got an annoying Window Installer msg that popped up the next day. That was fixed when I unistalled XP SP3 and re-installed Ofc 2000.
If I remove all of Office 2000 & 98, then install Office 2007, then should the install of SP3 be successful?

Not sure what you are trying to do exactly, so we'll try working through one problem at a time.
1st Problem - SP3 won't install? Yes try uninstalling all Office versions you have. Then install SP3. If you get the same Windows Installer error that you had the other day - post back exactly what the error says and we'll try to fix it. If the update goes smoothly with no error messages after reboot, then try installing Office 2007 only. You don't really need 3 different versions of Office and that could be what was causing your problems. If Office 2007 won't install please post back including any error messages you receive. |

Rec'd the same Error msg : "Service pack 3 Set Up Error - Access denied"
No codes given- just like before. Heres what I was able to do: 1) able to uninstall Ofc 2000 2) attempted then with Ofc 97. But rec'd a error "failed to unregister .SRG file" A Google search suggest locating a OFFPRO97.STF file and rename it to OFFPRO97.YYY - but that did nothing. 3)Then tried Revo Uninstaller- which ended up just removing the Ofc 97 Pro from the Add/Remove list. 4) decided to try install of SP3 anyways. But no luck. I reinstalled 97 & 2000 and now back to the beginning. Any suggestions would be great- though I may not be able to respond for a few days. |

The error message "failed to unregister .srg file" is nothing to worry about. It's caused by installing Office 2000 without uninstalling Office 97 first. According the following Microsfoft KB Article you may receive the message numerous while uninstalling Office 97 but just keep hitting OK and it will uninstall.
OFF97: "Failed To Unregister .SRG File" Error When Uninstalling Office Uninstall Office 97 then uninstall 2000. For the Service Pack 3 error - try the following: Error message when you try to install Windows XP Service Pack 3: "Access is denied" or “Service Pack installation did not complete” If you have to try method 3 - please do the following before you backup the registry. In Windows Explorer go to following: c:\windows Highlight the repair folder on the right > right click select copy Highlight windows folder again > right click select paste. This will make a copy of the repair folder and name it copy of repair. Rename this folder: repair2. Then backup the registry. Easiest way to this is to click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup Click Next > Select Back up files and setting > Click Next > Select Let me choose what to back up Click Next. Click the + sign next to My Computer > Tick System State. Make sure nothing else is ticked. Click Next. When asked to choose a place to save your back - click browse. You may get an error - just click cancel - in the save as window - double click My Computer > double click Local Disk C: > Click Save. Click Next. The backup may take a while to run. Now if your not sure what your administrator password is or if the account even has one do the following (I mean the actual account called administrator not a user account that has administrator privileges): You will need to be logged in with an account that has administrator privileges to do this: Click Start > Run > type: control userpasswords2 > Click OK Highlight the Administrator account > select reset password > make the password whatever you want > click OK > Click Apply > Click OK. Now you can try method 3 that Microsoft lists and if anything goes wrong and your pc won't boot afterwards we can fix it with Recovery Console. Make sure you have your XP cd handy just in case. |

Dire -
Where exactly do I find (with in C/windows) the Repair folder? - Am I actaully looking for "Repair folder"? I have already tried Method 3 - before I had posted last week. And don't recall seeing a repair folder. But, yes got a Reg error. Also, One link in Microsoft, took me to a IT version of SP3 - how different from the Windows update? & would it help me if I installed in Safe Mode? Thx |

Your looking for a folder called just Repair. It is in c:\windows
The IT version is the full version. The Microsoft update one only installs the bits you need - e.g. if you've already got most updates, etc since SP2 it wont reinstall them. Since Microsoft themselves recommending this as a possible way to get around the error then you should try it. Also yes it is better if you try to install it in safe mode. Also make sure you disable any antispyware or antivirus before you install it as these can cause problems. |
