I don't see a "Repair" folder - should I be concerned?

Will the full (IT) version install everything? In other words re-install or overwrite already installed versions?

I am thinking about re-booting in Safe Mode with Network access (I forget the exact name), then do the Windows Update. If that does not work, I have already down loaded the full (IT) version.

Don't worry about the repair folder as long as you know the Administrator account password it should be fine.

If you've downloaded the full version of SP3, then yes install it from safe mode, I don't recommend MS Update. The full IT version won't reinstall or overwrite everything. And since you've already downloaded it then you may as well use it. As i already stated Microsoft recommend trying the full version as a possible fix for your particular problem. If you wan't to try windows update first - it won't hurt. As I said previously - it is better to try to install SP3 from safe mode but it's up to you whether you use the full version or windows update.

Able to remove Ofc 97 & 2000.

Booted in Safe Mode with Networking- 1) could not connect to windows upate (but had no problem with Fire Fox) and 2) IT version of SP3 won't install in safe mode.

So, booted in normal mode. when I tried the IT version I got a "svcshost.exe has generated errors & will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program."

I did restart- but same error.
Found this:

This seems to be a common problem with svchost and windows update. Please try the following and then install SP3.

You receive an access violation error and the system may appear to become unresponsive when you try to install an update from Windows Update or from Microsoft Update

If you can' get it to work then I recommend doing a repair install of Windows. You will not lose any of your files or programs by doing a repair install. Then running windows update and hopefully SP3 will install without any problems.

To do a repair install do the following:

Insert your windows XP cd, in BIOS set first boot device to CD,

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.
2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.
3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.
4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.
6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

If you still have problems after trying all the above please post back.

Looks good- Thanks.
and have Office 2007 running as well.

Curious, the uninstall of Ofc 97 & 2000 was not as smooth (well neither was installing SP3 for XP)- wonder if any left over items in the registry I should be looking for and deleting?

If its all working correctly now then leave the registry alone. You may find if you do a registry cleanup that you end back where you started.

Will mark as fixed.
