Okay....I'm back and I got nothing good to report.

After returning home, computer off for 5 hours, I powered on the computer and got the same ol'....same ol'.....black screen and the buzzing sound when hitting reset.

I spent 1 hour and 45 minutes trying to get this thing to boot.

Besides the old symptoms out lined in previous posts, I now have two new experiences to relate;

My first power on, when I got home, resulted in the computer/boot sequence getting stuck on the big XP logo screen. It hung up there for a while before going to the black screen. I reset, got the buzzing and fought the machine for the next hour and 45 minutes.

About 15 minutes ago I got the boot sequence to initialize but it became stuck in a loop....the "Apology" window came up saying the computer didn't start correctly and then it gave the Safe options...I selected Start Normally and then it went to the XP logo and then it restarted the boot sequence again, going back to the "Apology" window.

It was stuck like this for five or six loops, it didn't matter what mode I selected to restart; it always went back to the loop.

When I finally hit the reset it went to buzzing.

At this point I removed (disconnected) the new HDD and tried booting off the old HDD. It took three times of powering up and hitting reset before it would boot.

So this is where I'm at....I have no clue were to go from here.

New subject...same topic:

As for the question why my old HDD was jumpered as a Master.....the two HDDs are not sharing one cable. They each have there own cable and there own optical drive (CD-RWs). The manual I have for the old HDD says; jumper as a slave when two HDDs are on the same cable.

That's it......I'm hurtin'....

Tks

Bump...to the top...!!

This morning I'm back on the new HDD with the old HDD also connected......it went to black screen immediately at power up but a reset got it to boot first time.

If my files or a file is corrupt...Hey....I'm all for starting over.

Some one tell me how to format my " C " drive, which is partitioned......if it can be done, without wiping my " D " drive/partition clean, then maybe this is the way to go.

However, if I have to I'll format the whole thing....I just don't know how.......or.......for that matter where to go with the existing problem.

Thanks

\W.O.

Hello William I think you are in for a format I think the corruption is real bad.

This is what to do reboot pc and hit some thing like F1,F2,Del wich ever prompts to enter BIOS/Seup.

Set first boot to CD/DVD rom put in operating install disk press F10 save and exit.

you will see press any key to boot from CD/DVD then do so.

Some point during the install you will be prompted to to boot again from CD/DVD do not do this.

Do not create any more partitions.Just install on the one that is there.

Follow this link then:How to partition and format a hard disk in Windows XP

The pc will reboot at times then just let it do not take disk out untill you have actualy installed windows and the logon screen appears.

If you need any more help then ask.
I think the pulling the plug instead of a proper shutdown has corrupted your OS.

DIIRE just sugested changing the keyboard or try another power supply before formatting.Do a couple of test boots without a keyboard plugged in.Leave D:/ partition as it it is.

Thanks for the reply.

I believe you misunderstood me. I never pulled the plug in place of a proper shutdown. What I did is; after the shut down I pulled the plug and hit the power on button a few times to drained the PSU. All this was done way back in the process in order to eliminate a PSU failure.

Okay, I have to do some back ups, read your link and then I'll give it a try.

Just for info, I don't have an "operating install disk" I have a recovery disk.

When I installed the new HDD, it took the recovery disk because the HDD was formated/blank, I then had to go through hours of updates to bring the OS up to speed.

I've tried booting from the recovery disk but it won't take; a window opens that say there's an OS on the system already and it's newer than what's on the disk.

Therefore, I need to find out how to format the "C" drive/partition and then do as you suggest......at least this is my belief.....I could be wrong.

I'll read your link.

In the mean time just for info, I have a doctor's appointment and will be gone for a good while.

Thanks for your help.

Default [Resolved] Black Screen At Boot

I went with:

BIOS boot problem > memory > MBoard > to PSU.

Replaced the PSU with an Antec Earthwatts EA430 430W ATX.....the old PSU was a TRUBOLINK - LC- A350 ATX.

Boots right up, no black screen....no worries.
