Thank you for the suggestion - and for the connection with Pancake. Even though it didn't fix my operation problem, I am very glad to get rid of the malware crud that I knew was a factor in this mess.

I do not have AVG8 on there any longer. When I did the Sys Restore after attempting to install 8 but ended up with problems, I went back to a point 2 months earlier (thinking maybe I also picked up some malware during that time frame). By then it had uninstalled most of 7.5 but a couple of files still remained (although they should have been uninstalled in the process), and it wouldn't let me install 8 again. Now I have no protection, but at the moment I can't use the internet anyway.

And after yet another cold boot, it will still not acknowledge any mouse command to open a program or a file. The Start button will respond, and I can open All Programs, but nothing within either of those or on my desktop will respond - I either get nothing, or the hourglass for about 5 seconds, then nothing. The only thing in my System Tray is SpyCatcher - no clock or volume setting or any other programs.

What type of mouse are you running?
Is it an old "ball" type?
If so get rid of it... they are problem-prone
go for an optical mouse.
Fist thing I would try is another mouse-- mice are cheap.
get a good optical mouse-- like a logitech (any logitech)
Stay away from Microsoft mice.

Do you have any of the install discs for Windows ?
I also could be that there are some corrupted Windows (explorer) files-- sometimes malware-- and it's removal can damage system files.

If you can run a "system file check" see link below.

scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker) in this article!

Hi, Gang!

I could not do the system file checker, but I'm finally up and running.

A web person at work suggested I run Scan Disk from Safe Mode, which fixed my problem of programs and files not responding when clicked on. Then I did another uninstall for AVG, which finally allowed me to remove all the files (previous uninstalls left some files that I couldn't get rid of, blocking a new installation). I was then able to reconfigure my internet settings, and voila! I'm back in business.

I tried twice after that to install AVG 8, both times knocking me offline again until I would uninstall it. I gave up on AVG and downloaded Avast, which seems to be working just fine.

Thank you for your assistance, particularly the malware removal!
