Default Re: Can nobody help?

you state you were running AVG 7.5-- and went to 8.0.... were these the Paid or freeware versions ?

It does not matter much.... because if you have a partiallly uninstalled prior + a partially installed new version of any Anti Virus--- they will cause probelms.
Due to the nature of what AV's do-- they operate at very deep levels of your operating system's code--- they also have many safeguards against viruses removing them. This is to enhance protection against any nasty viruses.
When it goes wrong-- it can get very difficult.

Shutting down via the Power Button is never a good practice-- this indicates an application is not shutting down properly-- thus not allowing Windows to shut down correctly.Eventually this can cause system-file damage and reinstallation.

The fact that you are getting unwanted popup ads-- indicates spyware infection-- we must get that removed before we can fix anything else... they can be the root-cause of the other issues.

I do apologize for the delay-- and will PM the Security Team immediately on your behalf.your scans should have been read long ago.

Once you get "cleaned" -- please post back or PM me directly-- so we can get your AV situations fixed-- You need to have one fully-functioning/properly installed AV running right away.
I will be automatically subscribed to this thread -- so once you have been pronounced cleaned by security-- I will see what else we can fix.

Hi!

Both AVG installs are the free versions. When I tried to install the 8.0, it said it would uninstall the previous version. I did the same upgrade on my husband's machine and had absolutely no trouble. I think since my machine was already screwed up, trying to upgrade just made things worse.

I agree on the problem of shutting down from the power button, and I do know better than to rely on that. I should have seen the pattern developing sooner. The problem has been there for a few months now, and I was getting increasingly frustrated. Since I didn't know where to turn for help (all of my previous IT contacts are no longer around), I just kept telling myself it was no big deal. Wish I'd started looking for assistance much sooner!

Thank you for watching over this - I REALLY appreciate knowing I will have help soon!

I dont see anything in your log.

Ok.We need to download ComboFix.exe. This will give me a better view to the files that are running and also the ones that are hidden on your computer.
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Please copy and paste the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new 'HijackThis' log so that we can continue to do any further cleaning that your system may require.
Caution: Never run and remove files with Combofix unless supervised by a qualified security analyst who is experienced in the use of Combofix. Mal use can cause serious computer problems
NOTE: Combofix prevents autorun of all CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.

=======================================
Please download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Please copy and paste that log in your next reply.

Default Re: Can nobody help?

Attached are the ComboFix and the new HijackThis logs. I'm running the SDFix in safe mode now - or at least I think I am. It is just showing the window that says Starting Repairs and Checking Running Processes and Services. It's been sitting like that for about 20 minutes or so, so I don't know if it's hung up or if it just doesn't show what it's doing.

After I ran ComboFix, the log appeared, but I had no icons or taskbar or anything except my wallpaper. I was able to do Save As to put my log on the flash drive so I could take it to another computer, but then I had to restart in order to move on. Then when I booted again, this time into Safe Mode, it started fine, and I progressed through choosing Safe Mode and then choosing XP, but then it pushed me into my regular mode instead of Safe Mode. So I rebooted and it went ok, and now the SDFix is on the screen. Thought you might need to know that - seems neither of those things should have happened.
