Default Transparent Icon Background

Sorry if I've asked this is the wrong forum, but I couldn't think where else to post it.

I'm trying to convert a jpg image into a desktop icon. I found the website, Favicon, which asks you to browse for the image before clicking 'convert to favicon'. This all work wonderfully, and the software creates a nice crisp icon, but when I place the icon on my desktop, it is on a square white background.

I used Corel Photo Paint and the 'magic wand' tool, to cut around the image so that it was on a transparent background, but when I try to save, I'm told that the picture and backgrounds will be merged. I hit okay and the white background re-appears. How do I get the image so that there's no background, so that when I use the Favicon website to convert it to an .ico, it shows on the desktop WITHOUT the square white background?

Hope that was clear enough. Thanks in advance.

Hey bub,

If I remember correctly, only PNG and GIF support transparency, so you'll have to make sure to save your icon as either one of those
