Default virus,keeps rebooting only to xp page

Hi guys,a friend of mine has a problem with his pc,he opened up an e-mail wich had a virus attatched to it, so he tried to restore it to an earlier date,which it did but now all it doe`s goes to the window black xp page start up then reboots it sellf over and over again.
How would get round this or would this be a total re-install, Phil

does he have the install disk? Can he boot into safe mode? If the former, have him boot into the recovery console (press 'r' after booting from the install disk) and run 'chkdsk /r' at the c:> prompt.

If the latter, have him defrag the disk in safe mode and see if he can get into windows then. If he can get into windows, we can have him run some diagnostics to see if the virus is still around.
