Default Pros and Cons of desktops & laptops...

Hey all! I'm a computer tech and I build custom made desktops, quality desktops at that. I get clients asking me why would they invest in desktops oppose to laptops. So I'm asking my colleagues here, what's the pros and cons of desktops and laptops? Since we can't build a laptop, why would I tell them desktops are just as good?

you can build laptops

Its down to what the customer wants. If they want to play games then the answer is easy as you just say graphics cards if the customer wants to browse the web and general office then a laptop is fine

Hello Marioc89. I believe you are more aware of the answer than you realise but here are some pros and cons I think valid.

Desktop pros: You are not limited to run time(battery). Components for upgrading are easier to find. Upgrades are cheaper. The machines themselves are cheaper. I could go on here.

Desktop cons: You can't tote them around. Power hungry. ect. ect.

Laptop pros: Portable. Compact. Can be used most anywhere.

Laptop cons: Expensive. Limited runtime(again battery). Limited upgradeability.

Laptops and Desktops have their own part to play in my opinion.

I agree - what is fit for purpose is what you or your customer needs.

For me, I like to game on my PC but I couldn't live without the portability of my laptop.

So do you think the laptop will out do or phase out the desktop? And Zing, you said you can build laptops? How and where would I get parts like that from?

Hi
Laptop

Con: laptops are only good for a limited amount of time due to much of the hardware not being upgradable which makes them useless for gamers with in a few months.

Pro: You can take it with you easy.

PC

Con: You cant take it with you easy.
Pro: it is suitable for biz or games and is completly upgradable better for multipul screens.

They need to redesign the laptop so the graphics is upgradable and have it with 3 screen 1 center screen with 1 that folds off each side of the center screen. This could be done if the mainboards where built to a standard like in a PC then you would see the end of the big PC

To your first question. No, They are basically the same. Will desktops be phased out? Not in the foreseen future. As for your question to Zinglebarb, Parts for laptops are available. I can not speak for anyone else but I know it is possible and I have seen some custom built Laptops but the logistics of the build would be a nightmare and expensive. Too expensive for most customers.

Yes Marioc, expensive mainly because you can not buy the parts in enough quanity. Expensive because the main manufacturers do not want you cutting into theirs sales. Now as to who and where. Two places, Laptop manufactures and computer parts jobbers that buy laptop parts over runs. I know I said manufactures did not want you cutting into sales but truth is that when they over run the parts for a certian model, those parts are sold. Usually jobbers buy these and sell them as dicounted replacement parts. I must ask your forgiveness for not having a more specific answer on who and where. When I retired from the PC repair business I sold everything so all of my catalogs and records went with to the buyer.

You could get a micro itx motherboard an build the case and all from the ground up. It wouldnt be as fast but it would be more upgradeable.

Or what jobber can I order this mb from? And AMD this is for you or anyone, so thats what kind of mb that comes in the the laptops is itx's? Where would I get cases, processors and etc to even build a laptop?
