Windows XP/2000 - Computer hangs forever at Windows is Shutting Down screen posted in the Operating Systems forums; hello, My pc hangs at "windows is shutting down screen". I tried killing all the process before shutting down. What must be wrong? please help me out.. regards ...

Default Computer hangs forever at Windows is Shutting Down screen
hello,

My pc hangs at "windows is shutting down screen". I tried killing all the process before shutting down. What must be wrong? please help me out..

Dude-- there a SO MANY things that can cause this there are whole websites devoted just to this problem.

A good place to start is here:

most of the time it is a 'hung App"-- like do you have any Roxio EZCD products installed ...........they are famous for it.

Open registry editor(start run regedit) and browse to HKEY_CURENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop and change the value of hungapptimeout knock a 0 off also drop the waittokill time on the same key drop a 0 off see what happens then.

Backup reg first by clicking file and export save to desktop

I tried doing that, i changed the value of hungapptimeout to 500 and waittokill time to 200. Yet I am having the same trouble. What must be the problem?

add another 0 back on to waittokill time, u knocked two 0's off, it should be 2000

hi i have the same problem with intermittent close down,have looked at win troubleshooter but find it somewhat confusing,here is the build type for mine if it means anything to you.
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600

Hello sorry no replies.

Have you installed any software recently prior to this slowness/hanging?

Have you installed SP3 maybe this is the cause.

Have you run scans for any spyware/virus,s etc?

Did you try the fix,s below and add the 0 back on?

Have you tried a system restore/repair install?

Have you recently installed AVG 8?
